Festival of lights

Light displays and shows are part and parcel (!) of the festive season – with towns across the UK competing for which celebrity turns on their lights, to elaborate decorations on private houses and in shop windows. This year some stores are taking the light theme a step further combining 3D and hologram technology into their displays with projections onto the stores themselves. Ralph Lauren created an incredible show (http://4d.ralphlauren.co.uk/) on their London and New York stores, and was soon followed by H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue and their eye catching light displays.
For a real look at the extent of projection mapping and the possibilities of this technology, the city of Lyon and the Fête des Lumières (8th-11th December) is an incredible spectacle. With a huge variety of light installations across the city, performance art, sculpture and advertising, some of the pieces defy belief. One interactive piece allows passers by to manipulate the artistic impression of a building projected onto itself using a voice activated system. The results are a sort of Avatar meets Star Wars … A pity the show is only on for 4 days, not to be missed if you can get there!
